Substance of the Universe

The start of a new academic year marks a period of change for the children and this has been reflected in their science learning. This term, staff have encouraged children to demonstrate curiosity about the world around them in times of change and developed their skills in asking questions scientifically to help them move towards an answer.  These lessons have built upon previous knowledge due to teachers having a clear progression in learning outcomes for the children and being able to reflect on their previous learning.

Understanding the World - EYFS

Developing on the early learning goal ‘understanding the world’, the children have examined changes in the world around them. The children have been on outdoor learning walks and have collected examples of autumn such as leaves and conkers.

The Changing Seasons - Year 1

Year One furthered their learning from the Early Years Framework by learning about the changing seasons. They discussed how the world around them changed, looking at the changes in the trees and weather. They predicted on how their clothes might change in different seasons and why that might be.

States of Matter - Year 4

Year 4 have examined different states of matter and how different structures of particles can affect the properties of a material. They have looked at everyday objects and examined how they can change and move. They predicted what might happen to these materials in different environments (heat, cold etc.) and reflected on what happened

Earth and the Universe - Year 5

Building on their knowledge of changing seasons, Year 5 deepened their knowledge on why these things happen. They examined geocentric and heliocentric models of the universe and how the rotation of the Earth can affect day, night and the changing seasons and acted this out.
