Life, Light, and Materials

Spring marks the change of seasons and has allowed children to develop an understanding of natural phenomena around them. This has been seen in different strands of science such as biology (life cycles) and physics (materials and their properties). This hands on, practical learning has allowed children to appreciate the way science affects our lives, in younger year groups this is on a more personal level and becomes broader as the children understand the wider impact of science in the community. They have continued to develop their enquiry skills by asking questions about the world around them and what they can observe.

Life Cycles - Reception

Reception have been learning all about life cycles this term. They have examined how frogs change and develop over time. They have also looked at how plants change and grow from a seed by planting their own and observing how they change.

Material Manipulation - Year 1

In Year 1, the children have been learning about the different materials that surround them. This is built on in Year 2 where the properties are examined - can they be squashed, bent, twisted of stretched. This provides the foundation for looking at different states of matter and their properties in Year 4. The children will then evaluate the materials and use this to decide what to build their cars from.

Canines and the Food Chain - Year 4

In Year 4, the children have been learning about food chains and also how food is digested. In order to do this, they have learnt all about the different kinds of teeth and how to look after them. They have examined how different liquids affect their teeth through an experiment using egg shells as the egg shell contains calcium carbonate which is found in teeth.

Let there be Light - UKS2

The children have built on their learning of Year 4 by learning about how light travels in the world around them. They have examined how light can refract and how this changes what the eye can see.
