Fundamental Movements - EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) athletics segment in Physical Education (PE) aims to develop children's fundamental movement skills, coordination, and basic athletic abilities in a fun and engaging way. This segment focuses on fostering physical development, encouraging active participation, and promoting a love for physical activity through structured play and guided activities.

The Biomechanics of Speed - KS1

In this unit of work, we are looking a little deeper into the mechanics of running and changing speed. We are also beginning to work on jumping for distance by taking off from one foot and landing on the same foot – hopping. We explore how quickly we can accelerate from a variety of different positions including sitting, standing, kneeling, lying down, etc., and allow the children to find the position that they feel helps them to get up to full speed the quickest.

The Core Throwing Techniques - LKS2

In this unit of athletics, we focus on introducing pupils to the four core throwing techniques in Athletics. As well as using an overarm throw to propel a javelin, children also explore the heave throw (generally used to throw a hammer), a sling throw (generally used to throw a discus), and a push throw (generally used to throw a shot put). For the different throwing techniques, the focus of the unit is to introduce the different styles and allow children to explore the different mechanics of each throw.

Cycling Safely - UKS2

In this unit, they have focused on sharpening the four core athletic throwing techniques learnt in earlier years.

Cycling proficiency - The CPS taught children who can already ride a bicycle, how to do so more safely. It covers what to wear, bicycle maintenance and the rules of the road. It also allows children to practise cycling manoeuvres in a safe environment.
