Young Engineers, Big Ideas
As part of the implementation process, an ambitious and cohesive medium-term planning demonstrating the progression of core knowledge (substantive) and skills (disciplinary) pupils will acquire in their study of DT in each year group will be curated. The medium-term plan will feature an overarching enquiry question which will map out the learning journey of pupils including their extended experiences and learning outcomes. The medium-term plan will be translated into child-friendly enquiry questions which will guide the learning journey of the pupils. Impact of this implementation process will include clear and precise triangulation between the medium-term plans, pupils' learning (as seen during learning observations), extended learning experiences and pupils’ booklets .
Eggs-elant Bakers.
Reception children had fun baking cakes for a cake sale. Using the eggs as a weight, the children measured the flour, sugar and butter .
The adults used pictures and single words in a sequence so the children could follow verbal, pictorial and written prompts.
After the children had mixed the ingredients and baked their cupcakes they were then able to sell them after school.
Sliding into Easter - Year 2
Children in year 2 are learning about the Easter story in RE. They’ve previously used sliders and levers in the pictures of the Great Fire of London. Knowing that sliders are bars that move forward and backward in a straight line, and, that levers are bars that move around a pivot, helps the children visualise the movement in the Easter story in their first attempt.
Packing for the Jungle - Year 3
In year 3, children have learnt about the rainforest. In their DT project they will apply this knowledge. They have evaluated how fasteners are used, features of fabric and different styles of bags; they talked about the advantages and disadvantages of bag design in the context of the jungle. This will lead into the design of bags for their ‘jungle adventure’ booklet.
Mini Mechanics - Year 5
Year 5 are making battery powered cars with pulleys attached to the motor and the axle. They select from a range of different size wheels and materials for the chassis. Most of the children have made elastic band cars when they were in year 4. The children have to consider the weight of materials and the surface of the ground . They will share the toy cars with EYFS when the design is complete.
