Punchdrunk Poetry

Driven by the Punchdrunk Project we wish to create a poetry friendly school, which means developing an environment and an ethos where children have the opportunity to listen to, share and see a range of poems in a range of circumstances. We are exposing children to poetry regularly in formal and informal ways which helps them to develop an appreciation of many kinds of writers and forms. Enjoying, reading and hearing public poetry regularly develops a shared culture and an acceptance that poetry is important.

Slithering Sonnets - Nursery

For the whole school project we focused on acrostic poems (linking to Chinese New Year, year of the snake). We looked at the word snake, generated ideas as a class and wrote a poem together (can be seen in corridor if you need a picture). We have also sung and recited nursery rhymes. Moved on to non-fiction writing now (growing topic).

Pyro-Performers - Year 2

In their learning about the great fire of London, year 2 wrote their own version of a London's Burning poem. They created fire sounds with a variety of musical instruments and used creative dance to represent the flames. They finally performed the poem to the school and parents in their class assembly. *We looked at features of poems (verses, repetition, layout etc), read different types of poetry, wrote our own.

Olympic Poetry - Year 4

Many of the cross-curricular themes and topics that act as a focus for learning and teaching in the primary classroom are capable of being illustrated through poetry. In Year 4 pupils wrote rhyming poems about their favourite Greek Gods. In Year 3 the children wrote Kenning poems using the pattern of noun - verb or noun - noun based on animals from the rainforest.  Children recited different poems accompanying them with actions. Into the Wonderverse - Year 6

In Year 6 opportunities have been provided for children to perform to their class and then to the whole school. Their poetry on immigration is powerful and emotive and cross curricular.

In Year 5 the children have had the opportunity to share their poetry with a wider audience by entering a competition (2025 - Wonderverse). They have been able to choose from the amazing Tudor poems.
