English: “Think-Aloud Technique”

Our goals for English in the school are:

To foster a love of reading and produce confident, life-long readers who are fluent and able to comprehend a wide range of text and media.
To immerse pupils in rich, quality and diverse texts, enabling them to write creatively and independently in a variety of styles.
To develop our pupils’ mastery of grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax allowing them to express their thoughts with clarity and precision.
To provide ample opportunities for all pupils to articulate their ideas clearly and confidently in discussions, understanding the power of their words in influencing and inspiring others.

Baby Steps and Peer Learning - EYFS

In Early Years children read during role play. They know reading is left to right, most are able to segment and blend simple words and many are remembering the 'tricky' words.

The child in the photo is a higher ability reader and writer, she is using intonation in her voice when she reads sentences back.

Learning the “Think-Aloud Technique” - Year 2

Gaining Deeper Understanding - Year 3

Year 3 pupils use of the think-aloud technique showcased how younger pupils can benefit from this strategy. By visualising, predicting, and questioning during reading, Year 3 demonstrated how active thinking can make understanding texts easier and more engaging.
