Structures and Constructions

Morden Mount Design Technologists will/Pupils will leave our school able to  make plans and construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources in creative, relevant projects which encourage them to analyse, problem solve and evaluate.

Design of the Body - Nursery

In nursery children are learning about their body and shapes. The children assembled a ‘doll’, made up from scrap material, that uses different attachments for the legs, arms, feet and head and emphasizes basic shapes in its design. The children discuss the different shapes that can be found with the design and practise their fine motor skills to use a zip, toggle, button, velcro and buckle.

Dimensions and Buildings - Year 1

In Year 1, children are learning about different places in London. They named an abbey and two cathedrals in London. Using an outline drawing, the children identified the 3D shapes within the building. As a class group, the children saw the deconstruction from a simplified 3D art straw model of a church to a series of rectangles and triangles. Each child made a 2D shape, and as a group reconstructed the church model.

Shelters and Structures - Year 3

In Year 3, the topic page refers to the prior learning of free standing structures made in year 1. The children use 3D design in Tinkercad to explore how they can design their structure. Using this and their understanding of shelters made in the Stone Age, the children build large shell structures.

Modelling WW2 Structures - Year 6

Using prior knowledge, Year 6 design, build and test models of shelters that were used in World War II. Through the teaching of the Anderson and Morrison shelter, and identifying frame structures around them, the children will understand how triangulation can strengthen the structure. The children will design their model structure to meet the demands of a class challenge.
